Where were your words 5 decades ago? No use having regrets; especially about the past. We could say, “If only I knew.” Was the glass half full? I missed my line; all a question of bad timing.
“I guess,” you say as your head shakes.
Missed for all time, opportunity knocked but once. I come to the door. The misty water of tears on the landing falling like rain.
“Go away!” Shed for naught. A clock strikes. I hear the hour. See it take its leave.
The fusion with tea, our exuberance at meeting. Festering crumble cakes at a table set for two. Champaign on the table.
If only.
The glint of silver set. The stars aligned; sure of it. I would cross the stage or the Rubicon. (I can see myself walking, a scene playing over in my mind.)
For the cameras, fame and confetti. And flashing bulbs.
And, then, and if only; accept that award, envelope discarded and so many tears. So many years. Spent in this industry. Of light that flows like water. Of the sky alive with energy. All the planning, writing comes to pass.
The acting is like a fine wine that has its age. It is with heavy heart in hand; and you to be my co-star. (Just think of it my darling). Smile in your expensive dress designed by a genius from a country whose name I cannot pronounce.
And it’s all a love story. Wrought it is for naught. Place in the night sky, fleeting like a fallen star, we pocket our destiny. Limo door shut tight as a drum. We depart; our final time. And dimmed, growing dimmer, then a heart-wrenching calm.
