pernicious — planetary — visitational
spaceship’s waver — Like the movies?
Sure, you ask. —
above, parting clouds — bright
yellow setting backdrop a city scene —
leaning aback —
man in the street, cigarette — curls of smoke escape
me —
but not for long — at least,
until now — I arrive,
I think to myself —
thank god I got across the Washington Bridge —
imagine, an opening door — step
out onto the street, curbside —
I must be calm
or they will suspect; a thought
I should be thinking — but I go on
stark wonder — dark window
shows now —
darkness, I enter — the velvet parts
— cinematic breezes
and white gossamer window curtains
sustain
my heartfelt sympathies —
raindrops —
break the silence — not so silent;
sure now, sure hollow — Is this my own shadow
entering a room in darkness? — ticking clock
______
chimes thrice
announcing the presence —
of summer’s breeze — the sounds of an empty city park
leaves yet, that I should, I brought myself here for something — shows
in a park through the grimy glass of a windowpane,
streetlights
finally lit, but now it’s the Bronx — glowing fading remnants of twilight — slowing,
slower, swoosh the last automobiles — a floorboard complains and a dark cat quickly leaves —
________
Why did I take that checkered cab?
I dressed for this, stupid me.
— sorrow unfolds the scene so telling — the ride a wash-up but emotionally,
__________
still, there I was — White House, featured lawn, Life from a magazine —
I’m thinking about what I read in the cab? — so goes the story — the sound
of the cabs closing door sounds final departure —
what possesses a criminal’s mind —
flight —
________
And now I rode here, again? — the endless revision of details that may never matter — engrossed, flipping from one scene to the next — too busy, too tired for the events of life for real — sultry summer ends in maddening rainy bluster — And now, this is the scene in a darkened room, but not with a stranger. — Would the police ever figure out how I got his address to begin with? — noise far away approaching car —- speeds away
______
again — such street to face a window;
stare it down,
to teach it a lesson —
murder scene dime-store alibi — Like I could think of something that would work better for the scene. — room, like no other, the lamp off as always,
he sleeps with satiety,
knotted necktie red like a wine
I remember —
trepidation, a recant, I could still leave, no one saw me enter — such betrayal but
vows so unspoken. —
I’m guilty anyway.—
Even after turning to leave.
Even after being duped. —
All the words imagined. Not to mention their inferred meaning. — To speak under influence of his subtle magic, yeah, like I could explain that. — a guilty party, wherever I turn, with folded hands.
And lets face it, women don’t wear white gloves anymore,
no matter the occasion! —
turns a whispering page.
Glossy magazine.
Another insubstantial object.
No possible possession. My realization that I cannot have that grew from a seed planted in my heart long ago.
And, I should have listened. —
because
it all never was — and that was the crime. — Whether one turns to leave, or not.
Sad to say, you’ve cheated yourself. — Changed forever, is the fool. For believing! — vanish will the sunset.
and then darkness.
In this town of towns!
Of the heart, it never ends. — green neon, movie in noir — Hitchcock it’s not. — And then the jostling crowds, Times Square, and its stark, harsh signage. — — And then, and then I’m not who I thought I was in the movie. The old show flickers its last. My heart goes to dark. — As the harsh lights rise, Times Square wonders for itself and wants no audience. — as
_______
I can’t believe the thief in the movie gets away — and this is the worst Western you could have taken me to — and a True Crime has been committed! Even without the anticipated revenge scene. Even as the woman in the pathetic blue dress leaves the house in the Bronx. I do not empathize. — and the cat left the room for absolutely nothing. —-
