Winter Storm Swirls with Grating Equity.
Soylent Green spills over the side of the vat making a mushy sound.
Mister Mayor-man stir witches brew sudden wholesome dash, wooden paddle in-hand.
“Well, wouldn’t you?”, Mayor-Man asks with a wry bit of honesty
just enough for his bitter mix.
Stirring great enthusiasm,
the paddle resumes with increasing force;
as the crowd searches
the filthy sidewalk for bargains:
free grains, discarded wads of mash.
“Were we not excited when the ball dropped?”
asks a repentant voter who begs for reassurance.
“Isn’t this the course of action to bring about
…an inevitable math
…..that brings the mush
…..to the expectant baby’s mouth?”
But in lieu of reassurance
what comes due is a bill,
which must be paid,
and the remittance is
increasingly sounded
by the growl of distant jets
leaving the horizon empty,
and frigid
this winter.
And the socialist was correct
all along
in implying the inevitability,
but misleading in the outcome.
The rain did come
lightly at first
but then
pounded the freezing sidewalk,
the mush, plentiful beyond biblical proportions
found its way downward,
into the sewer
which swelled like the ocean.
And the bounty blew like discarded wrappers
beyond the grifting shops
and state-run fare
to the winds
beyond all grasping hands
with frozen fingers.
And the cold steel
of despair
fueled the violent fire
of the kind of vengeance
that is born only
of a disappointed
gang
of thieves.
