And it is my duty also to make sure, as I have made sure, that anything I say or do in the exercise of my office is approved and sustained by the whole British Commonwealth of Nations. – ETC.
The early link between Churchill and Roosevelt might have come to public attention much sooner; the reason that it did not involves a spy case with strong contemporary overtones. Franklin Roosevelt had his own Daniel Ellsberg in Tyler Gatewood Kent, code clerk at the American Embassy in London.

Tyler Gatewood Kent (March 24, 1911 – November 20, 1988) was an American diplomat who stole thousands of secret documents while working as a cipher clerk at the US Embassy in London during World War II.

By 1939 [Tyler Kent] was suspected of engaging in espionage for the Soviet Union, but lacking any solid evidence, the Diplomatic Service decided to transfer him to the embassy in London, where he began working on October 5, 1939.
