Some conversations are but empty carts, rolling over pot holes; clatter lacking content.
Then, random strangers appear, another category. They endeavor to climb the ladder’s rungs. Perhaps a former silhouette. You’d least expect your time rewarded in such a setting. The random dark hall leads to a disgruntled flat.
Why tarry here? – you think, or so you thought.
And then to become the best of friends, later on; water rushing under the proverbial bridge.
It may well have all started at a party. You don’t remember the details.
Don’t forget your recent ride; appearing from another car while seated in the subway train, someone’s I-phone with spent batteries, you gathered from his furrowed brow and exasperation, asks you the time-of-day.
He smells of clove and wears silk. There may be a small dog involved in all this.
And dismiss not the public street-side rant, having left the subway with all its issues both grand and small. Vaguely a smile, stairs you climb, and climb; the scheme of things smiles back in time.
As you hurry to work one crisp morning; it could have been Fall. Suddenly directed at you, like a poisonous snake in dry brush, the bristled man, with worn hat, clothed in attitudes. Do these examples ever have some place they need to go? Who has such free time these days.
But a few blocks pass when; attired in a bygone era, standing in line, there is someone angelic. you both talk to pass the time. Engrossed in this exchange, you come to realize, she has mastered the art. An executive expending her efforts on the ground floor. The street outside the bakery hums along, with or without your attentions.
This middle space of street-view commerce has so little staff today; both few in number and effort. The bakery’s slow this blustery morning, from jelly donuts to the heavenly scent of coffee’s fine, but expensive progress, always the line. The New-York minute churns forth its Battery Park while you realize her poor taste in heels. ‘She must be freezing to death!’ – you think to yourself. The change enters your hand. ‘Goodbye’ is the order, after all is frozen over. ‘Adieu.’ – *
