Where’s the off-ramp to waterfall illusion sir? – I leaned out the driver-side car window and asked the disheveled man for directions. The urban landscape was as cold as the winter wind and I could see my own breath. At first he acted as though he didn’t hear me, but then thought better of it. I noticed his inadequate wool coat pulled about his chest as he turned to answer me. Oh my god, I thought to myself, the ravages of a past addiction.
Then I realized that this trip through the city would be something of an entirely different nature. The frost about the man’s collar took on a magical hue as the sun made it’s stubborn progress, there was an uplifting aire, and the general wreckage of life’s mistakes, and poor judgement seemed relegated to someplace to where I could feel secure. The car’s heater churned as the power steering glided to the proper lane and I eventually crossed the George Washington Bridge.
Was I under my own propulsion? The chance encounter with the man seemed to be an important inflection point upon retrospection. Was the universe a place of cosmic beneficence? Well, I certainly felt it in my soul, so, it had to be real.
The highway was nearly deserted as the winter trees whizzed by. Uplifting as their black branches held the glorious white of recent snow, the forest reminded me of my destination, my somewhat demented aunt was waiting in a quiet town with exactly one donut shop near the gas station where one decommissioned railroad snaked past disgorging mountain streams and along rusting truss bridges, the high-point of technology. I had to hurry if I was going to get there.
The destination would mark a turning point. Could a stranger on a city street end up being a life-long friend? I knew the path along the road I had taken so many times, and during that long drive, like so many others, time was condensed in my spotty memory as I watched my aunt age while the Buick’s engine hummed.
The town was called Illusion Lake. My aunt was a recently arrived resident. The median age of the town must have been north of fifty from what I had seen, the customers in the donut shop, the drivers pumping gas in the tiny town square with a gothic church and granite-brick town hall, and community library that always seemed to be closed. The train-stop was long boarded up and was evidently slated for demolition behind a chain-link fence. Danger, Keep Out, said the sign.
As one grows older one does not sweat the small stuff, would say my aunt with increasing frequency. She spent the days dusting knickknacks in her 800 square-foot cabin. Some of her former neighbors had died of addictions to pain medications, while others frequently bought lottery tickets. There seemed to be no winners in that town that industry and even technology forgot. It was an exit by the wayside.
