An ordinary reader of Roman history will just hear of the brilliant Academician Carneades and the wise Stoic Panaetius of Rhodes, because they visited and impressed Rome; but he knows hardly anything, as a rule, of the Greece in which these men of light and leading had been brought up.
The art of that period cannot be ignored; it appeals to the eye, in originals or copies, in every large European collection. But the visitor to museums who knows all about the ages of Pheidias and Praxiteles is astonishingly ignorant of the world in which the Venus of Melos or the Dying Gaul was chiselled.
A generation ago, boys used to learn geometry from the handbook of Euclid; but the few who had a vague notion that “Euclid” was the name of the author had no idea who he was or when he lived. If he had lived in the fifth century rather than in the age of Ptolemy Soter, many of the schoolboys—and possibly some of the masters—would at least have known that he was a Greek.

Things you just can’t turn away from, although out of a sense of decorum, you really should: Example, a really bad car accident on the freeway. Well, I can provide examples of some of the negative consequences of giving in to the temptation. However, I should describe how I got to that place to begin with.
I was in San Francisco, visiting a friend. Actually, not just a friend, but an important art collector. Not famous in the way Babe Ruth was famous in his day—or even now. I mean: known within an exclusive circle. I like art myself, but I don’t collect the big-ticket pieces. I don’t go to Sotheby’s and bid a cool million. That’s not me.
After a week of waking to a view of the yachts floating in the Marina district, breakfasting in his adorable breakfast nook, and discussing the stock market while he perused his morning paper (Nick knew almost as much about finance as he did art, and his house was testament to his success in both fields) the day arrived, regrettably, when I had to return to my more humble home in Dry Creek, Texas. Nick, physically built like a chiseled rock from spending so much time playing tennis in Palm Springs, was so genuinely saddened to see me go, that he broke with his usual stand-offish manner, and hugged me (this isn’t the typical thing a straight guy does in a bathrobe, even in a private, second-floor kitchen, so it was totally unexpected). But, what happened next really shocked me.
Nick offered me his car. Actually, I should say, use of his car. He said he would have offered to have his driver drive me, but that he had given Charles the day off. Apparently, my departure was unexpected due to the fact that Nick’s secretary got the dates mixed up when I called his office to let him know I would be coming for a visit (I’m in San Francisco, typically three-times a year). Nick would have Charles pick up the car at the airport; “Just park it anywhere, really.”
After a few wrong turns in San Francisco, I found myself near Potrero Hill, but then, unexpectedly steering the big car on a curving road which took me to Oceanview. After that, I crossed a bridge over I-280. (The traffic under the bridge was slow-moving and I felt a sense of slight panic at the thought of the possibility of missing my flight. Somehow, I soon found myself driving southbound toward the airport; the onramp was after the bridge (I think this was near the Community College).
So, it was from Ocean Boulevard/Ocean Avenue, to Interstate 280 South toward SFO. Like most drivers, I was preoccupied with thoughts churning in the back of my mind—until I saw the multi-car pileup ahead. It might have been comical, given the cartoonish positions of the cars—literally a pileup—if it had not been so serious. God, I thought, what if there’s a fire?
For some reason, I hit the brakes, a little too hard. A man in a red pickup truck—probably distracted himself—rear-ended me. My reactions became automatic. Before I fully knew what was happening, I was fighting to regain control of the Buick Park Avenue as the tires squealed beneath me. I eased off the brakes, but then hit the median barrier, sideswiped Nick’s car, and knew immediately that, cosmetically at least, the damage would be bad.
But none of that was the worst part.
After making sure it was safe to get out, I stepped from the car and watched the red pickup slow to a stop a few feet behind Nick’s. The driver—who looked, from both his appearance and the state of his truck, like a plumber—already had his insurance information in hand. It occurred to me that I should probably have done the same.
Thank God he seems physically unharmed, I thought.
As I turned back to the badly scratched and battered—but still intact—door, I realized, with horror, my mistake: Oh my God. I left the keys in the car, and the engine is still running. How am I going to get back in?
But that still was not the bad part, awkward and uncomfortable as it was to explain. All the while, the plumber—obviously in a great hurry—grew increasingly uneasy, flustered, and then angry. Yes, angry was the only word for the man I saw as I fumbled despairingly with the locked door, more for show than from any real expectation of success.
Then things got bad. A police car came up fast, though prudently enough, considering the wreckage and the possibility of people stumbling out into traffic. Given where my Buick had ended up, I was plainly the focus of the officers’ attention—the logical suspect, the presumed miscreant. I could already see how it looked, and how swiftly any casual observer would reach the same conclusion.
Both police car doors slammed shut, almost simultaneously, with a thud that was surprisingly loud. How solid. -I thought to myself.) As the two police men, perfectly clean-shaven (I notice the details), wearing regulation sunglasses, (It was kind of an electric yellow, always kind-of liked that look). They wore the uniform hats and badges, guns at the ready. It was so sudden how they appeared. And it was just like in the Hollywood movies – I’d seen this on the big screen so often.
I desperately hoped I was not playing the part of the common criminal. But, I had a sinking feeling, as, the first question one of the officer’s asked me was: “Is this your car, sir.” – I hadn’t expected that. I blustered a “Well, no. My friend loaned me this car, officer.”
As it turned out, the car had a numeric keypad on the door. It was meant for precisely this situation: someone locking the keys inside—especially with the engine still running. Apparently, I had been glancing at the door without realizing it. One officer watched me while his partner spoke into a radio with a long antenna.
I walked to the door and placed my fingers on the keypad, fully aware that I was being watched. I entered the code—Nick’s house number—and the lock gave a decisive click. The door opened.
The engine continued to churn.
But then, somehow, on this sophisticated car, I pushed one too many buttons. For some reason, the massive trunk opened. And then, it was at that moment I was really in trouble. There was no possibility of my making my flight.
As it turns out, the officer on the radio saw what was in the trunk. It was a Picasso, famous, and missing from a big-name museum; El Museo de Arroyo Seco.
And how, exactly, was I supposed to explain this? As it turned out, I couldn’t. I couldn’t even begin to fathom a plausible explanation as I sputtered out one half-realistic possibility after another to the officer—even after the steel handcuffs had been fastened around my wrists.
In the back seat of the police car, I finally stopped talking, even to myself. My mind still raced, though, as a somber pall seemed to descend.
The police car proceeded cautiously past the wreckage. The drivers and passengers involved in the accident, I imagined, would eventually continue with their lives, if not with their errands and appointments. Groceries would continue to be loaded into and unloaded from cars. Dogs would get in and out. Children would step from back seats onto solid suburban driveways. Somewhere, everywhere, someone would parallel-park.
Meanwhile, I was left to wonder. The machinery of life—legal and physical alike—righted itself and carried on, as we all must.
