Welcome to my page illustrating the many aspects of our collective Global Warming problem and what I hope to be helpful information regarding alternative energy and carbon-footprint reducing ideas.

We Humans have invented our own new geologic epoch called the Anthropocene. The Himalayan glaciers are melting. The Ocean’s waters are rising. And the acidity of the water is increasing. There is a mass extinction occurring now referred to as “The Great Die-Off.”

The delicate balance which moderated the weather of our planet is breaking down.

Environment and Energy

“Nations do not exist in economic isolation. Through international trade the world shares and competes for collective resources. Quite plausibly, the only reason the USA appears to consume less energy is that it has outsourced the more energy intensive aspects of its economy to countries like China. … For the purpose of relating the economy to atmospheric CO2 concentrations, the only thing that matters is global scale emissions by civilization as a whole. … CO2 emissions can be stabilized despite efficiency gains. But this is possible only if decarbonization occurs as quickly as energy consumption grows. At today’s consumption growth rates, this would require roughly one new nuclear power plant, or equivalent in renewables, to be deployed each day. … since wealth and energy consumption rates are linked, it can only be through an economic collapse that CO2 emissions rates will decline. If the size of civilization enters a long and profound decline then wealth, energy consumption and CO2 emissions will all decrease at roughly the same rate. Only if the collapse is sufficiently rapid will it be possible to maintain atmospheric CO2 concentrations below levels that are normally considered dangerous.” —Tim Garrett, University of Utah – link to Citizen Action Monitor

“I am recently retired from full-time teaching computer science and engineering at the University of Washington Tacoma, School of Engineering and Technology (was Institute of Technology). But my background is quite a bit broader. I have a PhD in CS, an MBA in Decision Science, and a baccalaureate in Zoology (with substantial coursework in math, chemistry, and oceanography) from the Seattle campus of UW.
My textbook on Systems Science, with co-author Michael Kalton was published by Springer in 2015. Recently I have been appointed as Editor-in-Chief for the International Federation for Systems Research book series (also published by Springer): Systems Science and Engineering.

For a time, in a prior life (pre-PhD) I managed a medium-sized electronics design and manufacturing company in Southern California, so I have some real-world management experience (successful if I do say so myself).

My first real love in the world of academics is actually biology and specifically evolutionary, cognitive, neuro-psychology! In other words I wonder how the brain works to produce the mind and how did it come about through evolution. I have dabbled in computer models of brain-like systems to control robots. See my academic website for more information.

Understanding the energy economy of the world we have, and the world we need.

“It’s really difficult to have a sense of energy and material at the same time we are thinking about the economy. In the newspaper you read every day about the economy – but it never really discusses the material foundations of economic activity, it’s mostly on the very abstract monetary level – profits and losses. That’s the way we have been taught to consider the economy, and it’s a huge task to change how we think.”

Dan Britt – Orbits and Ice Ages: The History of Climate
Published on Feb 8, 2012
– youtube-link

“Another lecture in IHMC’s award winning lecture series. http://www.ihmc.us

Climate change has become a major political issue, but few understand how climate has changed in the past and the forces that drive climate. Most people don’t know that fifty million years ago there were breadfruit trees and crocodiles on the shores of the Arctic Ocean, or that 18,000 years ago there was a mile-thick glacier on Manhattan and a continuous belt of winter sea ice extending south to Cape Hatteras. The History of Climate provides context of our current climate debate and fundamental insight how the climate works.

Dr. Daniel Britt is a Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Sciences at the Department of Physics, University of Central Florida. He was educated at the University of Washington and Brown University, receiving a Ph.D. from Brown in 1991. He has had a varied career including service in the US Air Force as an ICBM missile launch officer and an economist for Boeing before going into planetary sciences. He has served on the science teams of two NASA missions, Mars Pathfinder and Deep Space 1. He was the project manager for the camera on Mars Pathfinder and has built hardware for all the NASA Mars landers.

Britt currently does research on the physical properties and mineralogy of asteroids, comets, the Moon, and Mars under several NASA grants. Honors include 5 NASA Achievement Awards, election as a Fellow of the Meteoritical Society, and an asteroid named after him; 4395 Dan Britt. He is currently President of the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society. He lives in Orlando with his wife Judith. Few people have any idea that the knowledge that enables scientists to generate the computer models that predict what is happening to the climate now comes from the study of mass extinction events that happened in Earth’s ancient past. This knowledge comes from geology– mostly the study of ice cores, rock cores, and sediment layers. This is not taught in schools unless you specifically take a geology class although it should be. It is also not something you are likely to encounter on your corporate brainwash tube.

Few of us have any conception of the enormous timescales of our planet’s long history. Geology professor and Fulbright Scholar Marcia Bjornerud outlines the ways in which our everyday lives are shaped by processes that vastly predate us—and in turn, how our habits will have consequences that will outlast us by generations. With insight from her book Timefulness: How Thinking Like a Geologist Can Help Save the World she reveals how knowing the rhythms of Earth’s deep past and conceiving of time as a geologist can give us the perspective we need for creating a more sustainable future. Join Bjornerud for a literal history of the world, and a treatise for building a more time-literate and ecologically considerate society.

“Directly from Canada on a 45 min. Skype lecture, activist and researcher Dana Durnford will explain how the Fukushima Nuclear accident has affected all life in the Pacific Ocean and how it continues to do so.

Dana Durnford currently lives in Canada and calls himself a Nuclear Proctologist. He has been studying the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans for over 25 years. He has been the skipper and lead diver on over a dozen commercial diving vessels and has done over 14,000 commercial deep-sea diving hours.

For the past 8 years, he has been researching nuclear and depleted uranium in military conflicts. Dana Durnford is an activist and researcher on the Fukushima impact on the Canadian pacific coastline.

From 2014 to 2015, he spent 260 days exploring and documenting the British Columbia tidal pools in Canada, covering over 15,000 miles boat. What he discovered was that insects, birds, mammals and marine life along the British Columbia Coast are being threatened with extinction.

Dana Durnford has a live show on YouTube 6 days a week, which aims to educate people worldwide and to use knowledge and compassion to empower them.

Fukushima: Do Not Panic – You Will All Die – Cesium 137

“Steven Starr is a medical laboratory technician [MT ( ASCP) ] , scientific program director of the clinical laboratory at the University of Columbia, Missouri. He obtained his degree at the School of Health Professions in 1985 and has worked in many hospitals for 27 years.

Mr Starr is a member of Physicians for Social reponsibility , and the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. His writings are published by several organizations, including the Institute of Physics and Technology, Moscow, and has worked with several foreign governments and the UN to the elimination of nuclear weapons. He is also an expert in the field of environmental consequences of war and nuclear weapons.

In this video, he exposes us to the deleterious properties of the radioactive materials generated by nuclear accident , especially the infamous cesium 137, which has significantly contaminated Japan after the Fukushima catastrophe . This is the deadly poisons at the atomic or molecular level. Their activity is millions of times greater than that of some natural isotopes in the environment such as potassium 40. As compare a stick of dynamite in an atomic bomb !

The second point is data contamination official of Japan, which do not correspond to some independent scientific studies , and certainly not to the reality of the situation on the ground . It is between 10,000 to 20,000 square kilometers today have a radioactivity greater than the maximum previously authorized 1 millisievert per year dose. It then discusses the dangers induced by multiplying by 20 the permitted level , and the controversial method used to calculate the biological effects of ionizing radiation , expressed in Sieverts .

Steven Starr then cites scientific research of Prof. Bandazhevsky , phenomena of bioaccumulation in ecosystems , increased fragility of children and especially girls to the effects of radioactivity, and overall poor health status of young people in our days in areas contaminated by the Chernobyl accident areas.

Video made at the symposium “The Medical and Ecological Consequences of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident” ( medical & environmental consequences of the nuclear accident at Fukushima ) organized by the Helen Caldicott Foundation 11 & 12 March 2013 in New York.

The last two hundred years have seen the greatest explosion of progress and wealth in the history of mankind, but the age of oil that fuelled this expansion is rapidly coming to an end. The depletion of fossil fuels is about to transform life as we know it, and do so much sooner than we think. Kunstler explains what to expect after we pass the tipping point of peak oil production, setting out to prepare us for economic, political, and social changes on an unimaginable scale.” – as quoted on the youtube platform. “Arnie Gundersen, Chief Engineer of Fairewinds Associates gave an interesting presentation on the dangers of radiation at Sunrise Center in Corte Madera, California on November 23, 2015.

Have you wondered why people are still talking about Fukushima? Have you ever wondered what implications Fukushima has for California and for the Diablo Nuclear power plant? Because of the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, the one that was caused by the 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami, is not over and remains dangerous.

Three molten nuclear reactor cores are still missing and the radioactive contamination that this 300-ton mass of “corium” continues to generate and release shows no signs of abating, in fact is increasing.

Join us as Arnie Gundersen, a dedicated and informed expert, sits down to ‘unpack’ what happened in Fukushima, how it came to happen, what’s going on there now, and what we might still be able to do about it.

(The previous posting was audio only, due to technical issues. This presentation includes complete video of the event.) Video by Enlightened Films.”

How does a hydrogen fuel cell work? / ¿Cómo funciona una pila de hidrógeno?

Ajusa Hydrogen Technologies. H2 and O2 (hydrogen and oxygen), are stable gases in normal conditions, but in the electrodes anode and cathode of a fuel cell, the presence of catalyst activate these fluids that initiates the chemical reaction at room temperature. So, in anode, hydrogen atoms in contact with catalyst, are split into electrons and protons, instantly. In cathode, protons, electrons and oxygen from air, when at the same time contact the catalyst, merge together into water molecules.
